Fe-Mo Formaldehyde Catalysts: JQ Series Selection and Evaluation

Nov 29,2024

Iron-molybdenum (Fe-Mo) catalysts are used for the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde. SYAMCAT's published JQ-series product information identifies JQ116, JQ216 and JQ316 as Fe-Mo oxide catalyst grades. Selecting a grade requires a review of the reactor, feed composition, loading requirements and performance targets.

This guide explains the information needed for selection and quotation, and how to interpret catalyst evaluation data. Product specifications and project test results should be read with their stated conditions and measurement definitions.

1. Identify the Application and JQ Catalyst Grade

Confirm that the enquiry concerns formaldehyde production by the Fe-Mo process. Provide the current catalyst manufacturer and full grade designation, together with the existing specification and loading arrangement. State whether the enquiry is for a new unit, a planned replacement or evaluation of an alternative product.

The SYAMCAT JQ-series product page lists JQ116, JQ216 and JQ316, with dimensions, bulk density and other specification data. These are grade-specific properties; matching the general description “Fe-Mo catalyst” does not establish that products are interchangeable or suitable for the same loading.

For a proposed grade, request the current technical data sheet, supplied form and dimensional tolerances. Resolve any difference between the existing purchase specification and the supplier's proposed product before confirming the order.

2. Match the Selection Review to the Reactor and Feed

The plant's process or technical team should provide the data used for the assessment:

  • Feed and gas composition: methanol concentration, available gas analysis and known impurities, with units, sampling location and dry- or wet-gas basis.
  • Operating conditions: normal and expected temperature, pressure and flow ranges, measurement locations and reference conditions for gas volumes.
  • Reactor and loading: reactor configuration, relevant tube or bed dimensions, available loading volume, existing loading drawing and any support or inert materials.
  • Process constraints: heat-transfer arrangement, allowable pressure drop, relevant operating limits and any planned changes in throughput or feed.
  • Product targets: required formaldehyde concentration, residual methanol and other agreed quality or performance criteria.

Identify which figures are operating records, design assumptions or values still to be confirmed. A quotation based on incomplete information should state its assumptions and the technical questions that remain open.

3. Compare Performance on a Common Measurement Basis

A conversion, yield or selectivity figure needs its definition and test conditions. Request comparable feed, loading, flow, temperature and sampling information before drawing conclusions from different product data sheets or test reports.

Evaluation itemWhat to confirm
Methanol conversionThe definition, inlet and outlet measurements, analytical method and conditions under which the reported value was obtained.
Formaldehyde yield and selectivityReport the two terms separately and identify their calculation bases. Do not treat percentages with different definitions as equivalent.
Product quality and by-productsThe required product specification, sampling point and analytical method, including residual methanol or other agreed quality criteria.
Pressure drop and temperature profileThe flow, loading geometry, measurement locations and operating state associated with the observations.
Stability and operating durationThe duration and scope of the records, changes in operating conditions, and whether the evidence comes from a test or an industrial unit.

Published product values are not a universal guarantee for every reactor. A claimed reduction in energy use, longer service life or advantage over another catalyst requires a defined comparison and relevant supporting records. Such outcomes should not be inferred from the grade name alone.

4. Prepare the Purchasing and Quotation Documents

Purchasing personnel can assemble the current grade, specification revision, particle dimensions and shape, required quantity, delivery location and required arrival date. List any packaging, inspection or technical-service requirements.

State quantities as net mass or packed catalyst volume and identify whether they are confirmed or estimated. If one supplier quotes by mass and another by volume, confirm the bulk-density and loading basis used for conversion. Separate catalyst from support or inert materials when describing the required quantity and scope of supply.

Compare quotations against the same enquiry revision. Check the proposed grade, deviations, quantity basis, included services, delivery terms and documents supplied. Ask which technical data sheets, safety data sheets and batch inspection or acceptance records will be provided, and at what stage.

5. Use the JQ116 Case Within Its Reported Scope

SYAMCAT's JQ116 single-tube evaluation case records a seven-day assessment for a Russian client in August 2024. The article describes the project context and evaluation scope; it does not publish numerical results that can be applied to every formaldehyde unit.

For a new project, ask which parts of the existing evaluation are relevant and what additional assessment is needed. A project-specific test report, its conditions and its measurement definitions are the basis for evaluating the reported results. A short test should not be presented as proof of a fixed industrial service life.

6. Proceed When Some Information Is Missing

Send the available specification, current grade, estimated quantity and delivery requirement first, with outstanding technical items marked “to be confirmed”. Ask SYAMCAT to identify the missing data and distinguish the scope of an initial quotation from a completed technical selection.

The published product information lists catalyst loading support, technical training and operation guidance among the available services. Confirm the deliverables and responsibilities required for the particular project through the SYAMCAT contact page.

Editorial update, 30 October 2026: the application, selection checklist and evaluation scope have been clarified. General performance comparisons have been replaced with requirements for project-specific evidence. The original publication date is retained.
