JQ116 FeMo Catalyst: Single-Tube Evaluation for a Russian Client
In August 2024, SYAMCAT carried out a seven-day single-tube evaluation of JQ116 FeMo catalyst in response to a Russian client's project requirements. The evaluation supported the client's technical review. Its findings should be interpreted within the documented test conditions rather than as a guarantee for every formaldehyde plant.
Project Background and Evaluation Objective
JQ116 is part of SYAMCAT's FeMo catalyst range for formaldehyde production by methanol oxidation. In early August 2024, a Russian client requested additional evaluation of the proposed catalyst loading before proceeding with the project.
The objective was to review the proposed JQ116 loading under test conditions intended to represent the client's application. This was a project-specific technical assessment, rather than a general comparison of every FeMo catalyst or formaldehyde production route.

Single-Tube Test Scope and Conditions
SYAMCAT assembled a testing team and conducted a seven-day continuous evaluation using its single-tube equipment. The project account states that the evaluation simulated the client's operating conditions and that a report was submitted to the end user's technical and production teams.
The test duration and catalyst grade identify the scope of this case. Interpretation of the results also requires the documented feed composition, catalyst loading, reactor arrangement and operating conditions. Numerical test settings are not reproduced here because they must be read together with the original evaluation record.

Evaluation Criteria and Reported Outcome
The published project account records a positive client response and a decision to proceed with the contract after reviewing the evaluation. These are reported project milestones; they do not establish a numerical performance guarantee for another plant.
A technical comparison should identify the measurement basis for methanol conversion, formaldehyde yield or selectivity, and the relevant operating conditions. This case does not publish numerical results or a like-for-like supplier comparison, so it should not be used to claim a universal advantage over competing catalysts.
What This Means for Catalyst Selection
For another formaldehyde project, the useful next step is to match the catalyst grade and evaluation scope to the actual unit. A project review should include:
- Feed composition and methanol concentration, including known impurities
- Reactor configuration and the proposed catalyst loading arrangement
- Gas flow or space-velocity basis and the available temperature and pressure information
- Performance targets, measurement definitions and the intended evaluation period
