Z428Q/Z429Q Primary Reforming Catalysts: Selection and Loading
SYAMCAT Z428Q and Z429Q are nickel-based catalysts for primary steam reforming. Their selection and distribution should be reviewed against reformer configuration, feed composition and operating requirements. Project experience provides supporting evidence, but does not establish a fixed loading ratio or service-life guarantee for every unit.
Where Z428Q and Z429Q Are Used
The current SYAMCAT product information identifies Z428Q and Z429Q as nickel-based primary steam reforming catalysts for hydrogen and ammonia production applications. Grade suitability must be reviewed against the feed, reformer design and required operating conditions.
This technical overview focuses on selection and loading. It does not assign the two grades to every reforming process or infer suitability from a general statement about catalyst activity.

Upper- and Lower-Tube Loading Considerations
The published product information describes Z428Q for upper-tube loading and Z429Q for lower-tube loading. It also states that other arrangements, including consideration of full-tube loading with Z429Q, depend on the reformer configuration and process requirements.
There is no universal loading ratio for all plants. Tube dimensions, loading volume, feed composition and operating conditions should be reviewed before selecting the grade combination and distribution. Catalyst dimensions and mechanical requirements should be taken from the current grade-specific technical documentation.
Deactivation Risks and Performance Evidence
When reviewing catalyst performance, consider the feed analysis, upstream treatment, operating history, loading condition and observed changes in the unit. A change in plant performance requires technical assessment; it does not by itself establish that a catalyst can be regenerated or that a particular recovery procedure is appropriate.
The current product page includes a hydrogen-production project reference and identifies its reported performance as specific to that project. Such evidence should retain its evaluation context and should not be converted into an unconditional lifetime, efficiency or emissions guarantee.
Startup, reduction, operating and any proposed recovery procedures must be confirmed for the selected grade and unit. This article does not provide a general regeneration method or claim that Z428Q and Z429Q automatically recover from poisoning.
Information Required for a Loading Review
A useful technical enquiry should include:
- Feed composition and available upstream treatment information
- Reformer tube dimensions, tube quantity and required loading volume
- Inlet and outlet temperatures, pressure, gas flow and steam-to-carbon ratio
- Current catalyst grades, loading quantities and distribution
- Production requirements, replacement schedule and any operating concerns
The Z428Q/Z429Q product page provides the current published specifications and project context. For related preparation, see steam reforming catalyst selection factors and the procurement information checklist.
