Reliable Ammonia Catalyst Solution
Desulfurization and Primary Reforming Catalyst Supply in Iran

SYAMCAT supplied an integrated package of feed hydrodesulfurization catalyst, zinc oxide (ZnO) desulfurization sorbent, and upper- and lower-section primary steam reforming catalysts for an anonymous project in Iran. The supply was accompanied by on-site technical support. The project sought an alternative after access to its existing European products and associated technical support became restricted.
This case describes the supplied product scope, the functions of the process stages, project-specific service-cycle information and a total supply-price comparison. The customer's name, exact commissioning date and other identifying details are withheld.
Project Background and Requirements
With its original supply route restricted, the project needed a coordinated product package for feed purification and primary steam reforming, together with on-site technical support.
Product matching was based on the customer's specified technical requirements, including production-performance needs under variable feed conditions. The package covered hydrodesulfurization, ZnO sulfur removal, and catalyst configurations for the upper and lower sections of the primary reformer tubes.
Scope of the Catalyst and Sorbent Package
| Supplied configuration | Related SYAMCAT product range | Process function |
|---|---|---|
| Feed hydrodesulfurization catalyst | YJ17 / YJ18 / YJ19 series | Promotes hydrogenation of organic sulfur compounds to H₂S for removal in the subsequent purification stage. |
| ZnO desulfurization sorbent | XT317 / XT318 series | Removes H₂S by reaction with ZnO, supporting feed purification ahead of steam reforming. |
| Upper-section primary steam reforming catalyst | Z428Q | Product intended for loading in the upper section of primary reformer tubes. |
| Lower-section primary steam reforming catalyst | Z429Q | Product intended for loading in the lower section of primary reformer tubes. |
Product-reference note: The grades link the supply scope to the corresponding website product ranges. They do not mean that every grade in each listed series was supplied to this project. The project technical documents govern the exact grades, loading proportions and configuration.
Connecting Feed Purification with Primary Steam Reforming
The package addressed three related process functions:
- Hydrodesulfurization: converting organic sulfur compounds to H₂S for subsequent removal. Organic sulfur conversion in this stage should be evaluated separately from the final sulfur specification for the complete purification system.
- ZnO sulfur removal: removing H₂S to support feed purification for downstream steam reforming. The ZnO material acts as a sulfur sorbent, with a different duty from the hydrodesulfurization catalyst.
- Primary steam reforming: using upper- and lower-section catalyst configurations for the corresponding reforming duties. The loading arrangement must suit the reformer and operating conditions; a loading ratio from another plant should not be adopted without assessment.
This description explains the functions covered by the supplied products. It is not a complete process flow diagram for the project.
On-Site Technical Support
Alongside the integrated product supply, SYAMCAT provided on-site technical support as part of the project service scope.
Performance Matching and Service-Cycle Information
According to the project information provided for this case, the supplied products maintained performance consistent with the customer's production requirements despite variations in feed conditions. The evaluation was based on the customer's specified technical criteria and does not establish a general guarantee for other plants or all forms of feed variation.
The service-cycle information has different meanings for the individual products:
| Product or assessment item | Project information | Basis and status |
|---|---|---|
| ZnO desulfurization sorbent | 24 months | Project target service cycle on a design or commitment basis; not a verified period already achieved in operation. |
| Hydrodesulfurization catalyst | 48 months | Project target service cycle on a design or commitment basis; not a verified period already achieved in operation. |
| Primary steam reforming catalysts | Approximately six years in service and still in use at the project review | Reported project service history. The exact commissioning date is not disclosed. |
| Estimated total service life of the primary reforming catalysts | Approximately eight years | Technical assessment of total expected life; a prediction rather than an achieved operating record. |
An estimated total life of approximately eight years is distinct from the approximately six years already reported in service. It should not be presented as eight years of achieved operation or as a guaranteed remaining life. Further service depends on subsequent plant operation and assessment.
Project-Specific Total Supply-Price Comparison
In the total-price comparison provided for this project, the price of SYAMCAT's integrated product supply was approximately 10–20% lower than the European supply proposal referenced in the project information.
The comparison concerns this project's total product-supply price. The available information does not separately identify freight, tax and service-cost components. The percentage should not be interpreted as the same reduction in plant capital investment, operating energy use or lifecycle cost.
This project reference brings together a coordinated catalyst and sorbent package, on-site support, reported in-service history and a project-specific supply-price comparison. Other projects require an assessment of their own feed conditions, loading arrangement and technical requirements.
