Description of ZnO Desulfuration Catalyst
ZnO Desulfuration Catalyst with High temperature type for feed desulfurizing purification.
SYAMCAT XT317 and XT318 are zinc oxide desulfurization sorbents for feed gas purification. They are used to reduce sulfur exposure of downstream catalysts. XT317 is used before hydrocarbon steam reforming in ammonia, hydrogen and methanol plants. XT318 provides conversion and absorption functions for sulfur removal in feed gas.
These products are commonly referred to as ZnO desulfurization catalysts. Zinc oxide reacts with hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), retaining sulfur in the sorbent bed. Grade selection depends on sulfur species, gas composition, operating conditions and the required outlet sulfur limit.
Application Scenarios
Feed desulfurizing purification:
SYAMCAT XT317 is suitable for feed desulfurizing purification in hydrogen, ammonia syngas or methanol syngas production plants with hydrocarbon steam reforming process.
Conversion and absorption functions:
SYAMCAT XT318 is a kind of ZnO consisted desulfurizer with both conversion and absorption functions, which can convert and absorb organic sulfur in the feed gas.

The appropriate operating point depends on feed gas composition, sulfur concentration and species, the required outlet specification and vessel design. Confirm the flow reference conditions and pressure basis during technical evaluation.
Applications
Ammonia plants: feed purification before reforming for ammonia synthesis gas production.
Hydrogen plants: sulfur removal from hydrocarbon feed gas before steam reforming.
Methanol plants: feed desulfurization before reforming for methanol synthesis gas production.
For feeds containing organic sulfur, upstream hydrodesulfurization may be required to convert those compounds to H₂S. Evaluate the need for upstream treatment and the suitability of XT317 or XT318 for the actual feed.

How do I choose between XT317 and XT318
XT317 is used for feed desulfurization before hydrocarbon steam reforming. XT318 provides conversion and absorption functions for sulfur removal. Choose the grade after reviewing feed gas composition, sulfur species and concentrations, operating conditions and the required outlet sulfur limit.
What are the operating temperature ranges
The listed temperature range is 250–400°C for XT317 and 200–380°C for XT318. Gas hourly space velocity is 500–3,000 h⁻¹ for both grades. Check the selected operating point against the actual feed and vessel design.
How much sorbent is needed and when should it be replaced
Loading depends on vessel geometry, gas flow, sulfur loading, usable sulfur capacity and the planned operating cycle. Estimated loading mass equals the confirmed bed volume multiplied by bulk density. Replacement timing also depends on the outlet sulfur limit and actual bed performance.
